Situation of workers / employees in labour sector

In the context of the epidemic, Kovid 19 has had a direct and indirect impact on many sectors in the Kingdom of Cambodia, including: textiles, garments, tourism, hotel services, restaurants, transport, construction, real estate, labor markets and the external economy. System and so on. At the same time, many companies have decided to close their businesses, temporarily suspend workers, reduce workers ‘wages, reduce wages or unpaid benefits, violate workers’ rights, labor rights and freedom of association. All of these factors have caused workers to face many problems, such as: job loss, incomplete wages 100%, loss of income, unreasonable excuses and violations of the law.

In addition, some workers are experiencing the risk of their income and expenses being unbalanced. Income is low, but he has to spend a lot on food, rent, water, electricity, children, health care, family, raising family members, paying bank debts, attending social events such as festivals and entertainment. In addition to the problems that workers face due to the effects of Kovid 19, workers also face many other problems, such as: low-paid workers, working long hours, some workplaces do not have adequate occupational safety standards, the use of short-term employment contracts. And illegal subcontracting, discrimination, persecution, imprisonment, violence, lawsuits against independent unions, and so on. Recently, some company owners have closed factories and fired workers and union representatives for not paying workers’ salaries and benefits in accordance with the law. In addition, the trade union law poses a significant obstacle to workers and unions in protecting the rights, freedoms and benefits of workers.

On the occasion of the 134th International Labor Day (1886-2020) on May 1, 2020, union representatives from the textile, garment, tourism, transportation, agriculture, construction and informal sectors submitted 19 proposals to the class. Lead the National Assembly and the Royal Government to review and resolve the problems and requests of workers to promote the economy, workers, decent work, decent wages, labor rights, workers’ rights, working conditions, freedom of association and other benefits enshrined in national law and international conventions. And so on.
