Mr. Ath Thorn, the president of the Cambodian Labour Confederation (CLC) and a member of the National Minimum Wage Council, continued with the final tripartite negotiation meetings to demand an increase of 2024 Minimum Wage for workers in garment, textile, footwear, travel goods, and bag products on September 28, 2023.
The result of the meeting shows that;
-The employers’ representative confirmed to increase the wage by US$202.
-Five of the employees’ representatives keep demanding US$213 while the other 12 are in favor of US$ 204.
-The government representatives confirm the wage by US$202.
Despite a total of 20 meetings, stakeholders did not unanimously agree on any figures, with workers ‘representatives raising two different figures: US$204 and US$ 213, while employers’ representatives raised the figure by US$202 and the government representatives confirmed the final figure by US$202 based on technical and scientific.
According to Article 12 of the Minimum Wage Law, the National Minimum Wage Council adopted a secret ballot procedure to support each figure with the following results:
The figure of US$202 received 46 out of 51 votes.
The figure of US$204 got 0 out of 51 votes.
The figure of US$213 got 5 out of 51 votes.
Based on the results of this election, the National Minimum Wage Council proposes a figure of US$202.
According to Mr. Ath Thorn, after the election result, the final result of the election is US$2, and the new Prime Minister will add US$2. As a result, the 2024 Minimum Wage is US$204.
