National Minimum Wage Council continue the meetings to demand an increase in the 2024 minimum wage

Mr. Ath Thorn, the president of the Cambodian Labour Confederation (CLC) and a member of the National Minimum Wage Council, continued with tripartite negotiation meetings to demand an increase in the minimum wage for workers in garment, textile, footwear, travel goods, and bag products on September 11, 2023.

In this meeting, Thorn raised relevant evidence concerning the economic and social factors, especially the difficulty of garments due to food, non-food items, and other social needs.

Mr. Thorn called on the government and employers to continue to facilitate solutions such as the following:

– increase 2024’s Minimum wage (MW) to $215 for garment workers in 2024.

-restrain the inflation from being low, which can lower the expense of workers/employees.

-reduce the expanse of the health care services for the garment workers and their family members.

– decrease utility costs appropriately

-reduce the expenditure burdensome of workers, including bureaucracy, service provision, and logistics, and also;

-request further discussions to determine minimum wage for workers in other sectors.

Be noted that each party continues to come up with their inputs mutually in a technical manner. In addition, the government representatives continued to compromise and explain the social and economic criteria to convince workers and employer representatives.

As a result, worker representatives maintain their demand point to increase the MW figure at UD$215 while the employer representatives are in favor of US$201.

The legitimate parties set a plan to conduct another meeting to negotiate 2024’s MW on September 18, 2023.

The Cambodian Labor Union was established on April 9, 2006 and registered at No KB / VK on December 31, 2008 at the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, a democratic and independent federation. Currently, CLC has 124023 members from 10 member federations, associations and unions ...
